Question from Ji Fan

Hi, my kids are 7 and 9 years old. They wear 225 and 245 boots and on 120cm and 130cm skis. My understanding is that the older one can use the junior kit whereas the younger one (w/ 225 boots) would have to use the kid version. Is the kid version available for this winter season? Thanks, Ji

Answer from Emmett I

Ji,

We'll get more of the kids ones in this winter, most likely late October or November.

One thing to note, the numbers in the sizing chart above are for the boot sole length, not the mondo size. A 22.5 size boot won't necessarily have a 225mm BSL. The BSL should be printed on the side of the boot somewhere.

Question from Dave

We bought a set of these from you last year and they were great! Perfect for introducing my 7 year old to low-angle tours around Tahoe. However, I’m trying to figure out if my son’s new boot (Scarpa F1 AT boot) is incompatible with these or if I’m missing something: when I place the boot on the adapter, secure the heel, and then try to lock in the toe the plastic toe lock just slips off the boot, regardless of how I have it sized. Any idea if these boots just aren’t compatible? Or are there other things I can try?
12/13/2021
Answer from Will M

Hey Dave,

Would you mind sending over some more information to the help@skimo.co email? Please include the Scarpa F1 size or the boot sole length as well as a photo/video of the failure.

Thanks!

Hi Dave, one thing to try is adjusting the toe bail into a different slot. This can be done by pushing the button and sliding the retainer piece out to the side (shown in this photo), picking another slot, and reinserting the retainer.

Question from Ryabn

I am pretty sure I am up a creek on this one. I just check the BSL on my kids boots, they are 223mm. He can ski at a high enough level and hike at a high enough level that I am ready to start taking him on easy tours, but towing him is pretty bad. I've tried it. I read your article on kids touring stuff. I am guessing that until his foot is big enough to get into a boot with a sole length of 245mm that there really aren't any other options at this point?

Thanks for taking the time.

Answer from jbo

Hi Ryabn, yes it's frustrating for the small kids! They are stuck with towing or booting in the skin track :/

Ryabn, I'm totally in the same boat! I have a little guy who is ready, but he is still small (mondo boots 190) and i cant figure out what to do with him! Please please let me know if you find a solution.

You may have already considered the pulk w/ a rope brake...this is a very simple set up using rope clipped to pack hip belt to a Paris Company Expedition Sled. I add PVC over the rope for steeper routes requiring switchbacks/sidehilling.

Question from Steve

will these work for an adult? Is there a weight limit?
10/5/2020
Answer from Julieana

Hey Steve, they don't specify a weight limit, just the range of boot sole lengths it will fit, which is 245 to 305mm. However, based on the materials these are made out of, I doubt they will hold up to the weight of an adult. You could look at Daywreckers as an alternative. But if you've got the money to spend on a true touring setup, having a boot with an actual walk mode and a touring binding would definitely make your days in the backcountry far more enjoyable.

Question from Jordan Kobert

Hey folks,

I bought these for my daughter this year and they're great, when they work. one side had issues with the back metal hold that kept 'popping' out. We only got 4 uses before it was completely unusable...

Any options for replacement or a contact at Contour? Thanks.

Answer from Cole P

Hey Jordan, we can help you out with a warranty. To further assist you I ask that you please email us at help@skimo.co and from there we will start the process.

Question from Eli

Hi,

We see that you're out of stock but hoping there is a way for you to find a pair for us. We are in shelter in place at the bottom of Kirkwood mountain. I'm 8 years old and have been snowshoeeing up the mountain every day with my skis and boots so that I can ski down. I really love it and it's the best part of my day.

Is there any chance that you know how to get a pair of these as I'll be here for another month...that's at least 30 days of trekking up the mountain to do the thing I love most...ski!

thanks for your help,
Eli and my Mom

Answer from Julieana

Hi Eli,

Unfortunately contour has completely sold out of the kids touring adapter for this year. A potential alternative might be the Hagan Z02 Junior Binding. We don't currently have them in stock but we have placed an order for a few in the small size. If you are interested you can email us at help@skimo.co or call us at 833-SKIMO-CO and we can send you a notification when we get them in stock.

Love the idea. Please get these made for small feet gloms. My kid is still in a 230mm boot, and he really wants to get out and tour. He won't be in a 245mm plus boot for at least two more years unless we see some explosive growth. Or really really thick socks.

Question from Sarah Ast

Do these fit size 7 shoe size?
12/4/2019
Answer from Jeff

Sarah, these are designed to fit ski boots. Will fit boots up to Mondo size 27, which translate to a size 9 to 10. They could work a heavy hiking or mountaineering boot, easily a size 7.

Question from Rachel

Will these work with a kids binding that fits boots size 19.5?
11/19/2019
Answer from Jeff

Rachel, you will need to check the boot sole length imprinted on boot. It is found on one side of the heel. Needs to be between boot sole lengths from 245-305mm. I was able to find measurements for one model and it was right about at the lower limit.

Great product. A few suggestions:
1) provide a 2 level bail/riser. Allow for a longer riser to make steep climbing less strenuous.
2) make a larger size adapter to allow adults to use it.
3) be available at retail. I had about 20 ppl ask me where I got them.

Question from Scott Nelson

Does this fit kids bindings or the wider Jr bindings (like the hagan z02 junior?) Also I was wondering if it might be possible to make this work with 240mm boot soles. The bindings on the ski are easily adjustable so I can set those a bit longer, but will 240mm boots be able to clip into the touring adapter? I'm wondering if I can drill another hole for the heel bale to make this happen?
10/10/2017
Answer from Trace Leches

Hey Scott, thanks for reaching out! This just fits the lugs of a dedicated kids binding, rather than the larger lugs on a junior binding. There are some pretty complicated plastic stops on this binding that will limit the 5mm of range you are looking for. If you have the skills I'd say you might be able to attempt a pretty involved modification, but otherwise you'll open up a huge can of worms and will forfeit your ability to warranty or return them.

Answer from Scott Nelson

So I picked up a pair of these at a local shop to try them out. I was able to make them fit the 240mm boot soles by shimming the boots up with a thin piece of plywood (about 3/16" thick). The added height pulled the wire bales in tighter to the boot.

Answer from James V

Great idea! What do you do with the shims once you take the boot out of the adapter? Or did the shim go on the adapter? Would like to see a pic of this.
