Alaska Range

Overview

There may be no greater big mountain ski destination on the planet. The Alaska Range sees a ton of snow, has all the terrain types and lengths you could ever dream of and it's relatively cheap and easy to get to. The range is around 200 miles long with Denali topping out at over 20,000 feet as well as the mighty Sultana (Mount Foraker) and Begguya (Mt Hunter)and many sub ranges at lower elevation like the Revelations and Little Switzerland. Wherever you go inside the range and however you get there, you've got to have the expedition skills, take the time to set up camp and get to know the snow, and then get lucky on weather. Easy? No, but when it's good....it's the best.

Skier access

Easiest and most used access into the Alaska Range is via plane with a glacial landing. You could also dog-sled in or just bushwhack the 100 miles. Flight is highly recommend! There are many operations in both Anchorage and Talkeetna. If you're heading into Denali, Sultana, Mt Hunter, Little Switzerland or the Ruth Gorge then basing and taking off from Talkeetna is recommended. Talkeetna is a great little tourist town and it's heavily set-up for safely dumping thousands of climbers into the mountains every year. Fun town to just hang out in while you're waiting for weather. If you're looking at something on the farther reaches like the Revelations then flying out of Anchorage might be best. We highly recommend a reputable operation like Talkeetna Air Taxi https://www.talkeetnaair.com/
