If you’re a devout skier and believe in the one true holy book, 50 Classic Ski Descents of North America, then a pilgrimage to ski the Cross Couloir is in the highest order of importance. Like many of the wilderness lines contained in the thome, the line is not easily approached, but well worth the effort. Doing this line in a day is a huge outing, breaking it up by camping at the campground at the end of the Notch Mountain Road, where the summer trail begins is a good idea. Despite the complex approach and navigation the views from the summit are hard to beat with the central location of this mountain. And the skiing isn’t bad either, the couloir starts off the broad summit and rolls over as you ski to the Northeast. The chute is very wide to start with some fun open faced turns on the skiers left. It narrows and continues fall-line for a few thousand feet, not as long as one might like for such a lengthy approach, but it’s about the location. The east aspect means this run sees plenty of sun and becomes a great corn run in the spring. Make sure to cut out skiers right before the line cliffs out. This leads to some fun skiing above the Bowl of Tears Lake while working through some cliff bands. Continue down the drainage until you hit your tracks and follow them back out.
