The Central Gully quickly comes into view as you enter Huntington Ravine, it’s the striking and narrow chute that runs down the center of the headwall, must be where it gets its name. The upper portion of the line can be rocky, but it’s skiable in most seasons with some possible side-stepping and remaining light on your toes. But once in the gut you’ll find excellent steep skiing ambiance against the large rock wall. In lean years or if the chute avalanches often there can be a short ice pitch where the line pinches tight above the apron, crampons and a tool may be required.
Park at the Pinkham Notch visitor center where the trail is easily marked. The trail leads to Huntington and Tuckerman Ravine for the first few miles then take a right (north) towards Huntington Ravine. Follow this well established trail through the thick trees until it opens up in the Huntington Ravine basin and the couloir is dead ahead.
Possible short ice section in lower couloir
Get away from the crowds and enjoy a more wilderness experience by skipping the neighboring iconic Tuckerman Ravine and playing in Huntington Ravine. Or, put your endurance to the test by skiing a line or two in Huntington, then topping out on Mount Washington and dropping into Tuckermans for an excellent round trip tour.
