Pioneer Mountains

Overview

The Pioneer Mountains are a relatively small and very rugged grouping just outside of Sun Valley, Idaho. These mountains are remote and off the radar for the most part since they aren't very visible from anywhere, out of sight....out of mind. They don't receive heaps of snow, but when access in the spring opens up they make for incredible ski mountaineering objectives and offer up a true wilderness experience. Devil's Bedstead has been named to the "50 Classics" and it's gaping north face is definitely something to drool over and ski upon.

Skier access

Get yourself to the town of Mackay in Idaho from here take the 93 to the trail creek road which is closed in winter, guessing you could snowmobile or bike. Follow along till road #134. Go up the Kane Creek road as far as you're able. I waited till late spring and took my motorcycle which came in handy for knocking off several miles. At the confluence of the Right Fork Kane Creek and Kane Creek you wan to cross the Kane Creek and head to the southeast working your way through the steep forest. It was dry ground when I was there and I didn't find any trails of any sort. It doesn't look like you wan to work the bottom of the Devil's Bedstead drainage, it looks tight and brushy, best to stay high and wrap into the basin at around the 8800 foot level. From here you'll be staring down the face, continue right towards it and pick the "safest" looking way to climb it. There's really no place to hide so obviously be feeling really good about snow stability.
