My Skiing

Alpine ski racing, early freestyle circuit, teaching, backcountry skiing, freeheel, ski mountaineering, mostly on heavy freeheel gear.

Currently ski backcountry and lift assist, prefer to backcountry for interesting downhill skiing. I like pretty much everything, but tour to turn on steeper stuff. Like all kinds of snow from windpack to powder.

Goals are to continue to learn and enjoy skiing. 67 years old with several decades of heavily restricted to no skiing (try to avoid that!) and hope to get back to steeper stuff in the backcountry. So far, old tricks are coming back, albeit a bit slowly.

My Gear

Boots: Atomic Hawx 130 28/28.5 shell (322mm)
La Sporitva Spectre 2.0 (314mm)
Hawx are my goto boot, may get rid of Spectre's
skis: Atomic Backland 95 177cm
K2 Coomback circa 2105

Recent Posts

I have been skiing the circa 2015 K2 Coombacks, 189cm with much enjoyment, but need to lighten up for the backcountry these days. I'd also like a little quicker edge to edge experience. I friend that I very much trust told me I should check out the the Backland 95. I am 5'11"" and these days weigh about 185-190 during the winter. I am torn between the 177 and 185 sizes, leaning towards the 185, but never have skied on anything shorter than these Coombacks. I am trying to optimize these skiis for backcountry...
