Not sure how the line relates to the theory of room temperature nuclear reactions, but it is a great name! This is a mega avalanche slide-path off the north end of the mighty Mount Timpanogos. It’s visible driving south on I-15 and it beckons to be climbed and skied. The line starts off the north summit of Timp where you’ll find incredible views off one of the finest peaks in the Wasatch. The line works its way down the ridge and into the wide avalanche path. Plenty of room to open it up and let em rip! It then funnels into a playful winding half-pipe gully until it empties onto the apron for a few many more good turns.
There are two main ways to access Cold Fusion from American Fork canyon. First is shorter in distance, but further in vertical. Park at the Mutual Dell campground, follow the trail through the woods till it hits the Timpooneke Road 056, then follow this mellow contouring road that wraps around to the west until you reach the base of the line. The second option is just to continue driving to the end of the Alpine Scenic Loop Highway and park at the lot. From here continue on foot to the Timpooneke Campground and contour around the mountain on the Timpanooke road to the west until you come upon the apron then head on up.
Catching it without being wind blasted or tracked out
Be careful dropping off the top in cloudy conditions, or poor visibility. Many parties have accidentally skied out onto the Direct North Face which ends in cliffs and a possible rappel, or into the forked tongue couloir to the west.
Awesome line of skiing, turns from the top are good and long! The Crux was definitely the exit though, skiing down to Mutual Dell via Bear canyon is about as much of a life altering experience as could be. Long story short, leave your long skis at home for skiing down to the car.

Solo ascent on an all green day. Dug a pit halfway up to assess wind slabs, but formations were pretty obvious on the sides of the chute. My heavy setup weighed me down and I was very slow. I threw on the crampons for an optional mixed climb for about 20 feet on the left side of the couloir. It was fun and surprisingly solid. Top was windblown and icy, middle was nice, and the bottom trees were a icy skeleton run. @lincolnclimbs on Instagram for more info and pics.
