Try these boots! When I first got these, I'd never skied anything other than 4-buckle boots. Wow, what a difference! The lighter weight is very nice, but the unimpeded range of motion is game changing. And of course transitioning with a single lever throw is important for racing, but it makes touring that much better as well. I was worried that these wouldn't ski well, but I've been pleasantly surprised. Yes, there definitely is a difference between these and a "beef" boot. But the tradeoff downhil...
This was my first dedicated ski touring jacket and it has been so much better than touring in full waterproof gear...it breathes so much better! I still use the jacket quite a bit, but it does have a couple design flaws: 1) There aren't any internal skin pockets and the handwarmer pockets aren't big enough for large skins. The pockets will each fit a small/medium skin, but stiffer skins for large powder skis definitely aren't going to fit. In that scenario I just put them loose inside the jacket, and ...
I really like this jacket! It's lighter and softer than most soft shells and packs down small. But, its the combination of breathability and wind blocking that really sets it apart. The insulation is very thin, but it's typically plenty as long as you're working. At 6'2"/185lbs, I was tempted to order a large. But I trusted the sizing chart and the US medium ended up being a perfect fit.
I love this jacket! It's a nice weight, breaths really well, and blocks just enough wind to keep from freezing on the way down. The pockets are also well positioned and appropriately sized. I can easily stow a couple pair of race skins, or even the full coverage mohair skins I use on my larger mountaineering skis. And the chest pocket works well for a phone, gels, and a soft water flask. When it comes to sizing, trust the size chart. I'm 6'2"/185lbs and usually wear a large jacket or shirt. The chart ...
These are nice pants, but think about how you'll use them. I prefer the shorts version to add some extra warmth over race pants or to wear under baggy touring pants. The extra length of these full pants would be nice if racing in a cold blizzard, but for most cases, I think the shorts are the better option. I got mine to meet the windproof/water resistant pants requirement for the Grand Traverse, and they check that box.
