When humanity first shed its furry overcoat as a species, they surely had little idea that their descendants would spend their free time striding up mountain ranges with wooden planks strapped to their feet. Though ski touring is hardly a replacement for persistent hunting, you can be grateful to your Hominid ancestors for allowing you the chance to enjoy Dynafit’s Mezzalama Polartec Alpha Jacket. Polartec Alpha is a miracle insulating material that is simultaneously water repellent, wind-resistant and breathable, making it ideal for layering over a race top or other light garb on cold, wet, or windy days. A tight-fit hood snugs down over your ears to protect them from Jack Frost’s worst, while twin zippered front pockets keep your cargo sorted as you climb. Besides its application for midwinter day tours, this jacket’s light weight and packability make it equally at home temporarily stashed in your pack on big objectives where base camp and summit are drastically different temperatures. This update to the Mezzalama Alpha retains the construction and small touches that made it a perennial SkimoCo shop favorite. We think the Australopithecines (and you!) would be fond of it as well.

  • Stretch inserts move when you do.
  • Dedicated smartphone pocket zips away your distraction device.
  • Polartec Alpha filling supplies weatherproof warmth without saturating the wearer in sweat.
  • Thumb holes let your wrists join the Polartec party. Also prevents sleeves from rising up arms as you move.
  • Reflectors make you eminently spottable.

Update 2023/24: Dynafit updated the Dawn color to a more sophisticated shade of Dawn.

Questions & Reviews

Chris S (used product a few times)
I really like this jacket! It's lighter and softer than most soft shells and packs down small. But, its the combination of breathability and wind blocking that really sets it apart. The insulation is very thin, but it's typically plenty as long as you're working.

At 6'2"/185lbs, I was tempted to order a large. But I trusted the sizing chart and the US medium ended up being a perfect fit.

Question from Dave
Does this hood stretch enough to fit over a climbing helmet?
Answer from Carlos M
Hi Dave,

Yes, I just tried it with a Petzl Sirocco and it's a snug fit but it works just fine!

Question from Max M
Is the size listed the 'American' size or the 'European' size? In other words, which size corresponds to a '48'?
Answer from Gabriel I
Hi Max, the listed sizes are US / American. So the Small is a 48.

As an avid ski tourer in Tahoe, I've found the Dynafit Mezzalama jacket to be an essential piece of gear for any trip where temperatures drop or the wind picks up. The hybrid alpha insulation provides the extra warmth I need on chilly mornings, while its wind resistance ensures I stay comfortable even on blustery days.

I typically wear it over a thermal weight grid fleece and airshed pro wind shirt for the perfect layering combination. It's also worth noting that the jacket has high pockets, which don't interfere with my backpack's waist strap.
