Hey Mathew, Two things to look at here. The brakes on this, and most other bindings, can add friction when stepping into the heel. Removing them would reduce the friction. Additionally, swapping to a different U spring with a lower vertical release value would reduce the force required for step-in (and also lower your vertical release). If you'd like to go that route, you will want the  Superlite 175 Z6 U Springs x2.

Hey Kyle, we will not be restocking them again as they are out of production. The Shift 2 brakes do work on the Shift 1, though.
