Raide LF Safeback Pack
Harnessing the superior strength-to-weight ratio of Dyneema in combination with a novel avalanche safety system, Raide Research has made one of the lightest avalanche safety systems available with the LF Safeback packs. Unlike most other avalanche safety packs that utilize an airbag to keep you on top of the snow, the Safeback system doesn't fight gravity and instead utilizes another method to try and keep you alive long enough for your partner to rescue you. Accounting for blocked airways and trauma-related fatalities, Safeback estimates that 65% of burial victims will benefit from this technology.
Similar to an airbag, the Safeback system features a pull handle that needs to be engaged when the user is caught in an avalanche, before getting buried. Once buried, the Safeback maintains a flow of fresh air around your mouth for 90 minutes, hopefully providing enough time for your partner to locate and rescue you. Unlike similar-sounding systems from the past, no mouthpiece has to be used while skiing. It is important to know the efficacy of the Safeback system is dependent upon the buried victim having a partially open airway. For more on their testing, please visit this link.
Apart from the integration of the Safeback system, these packs share many of the features found in their unencumbered cousins. Ample stash pockets are present that allow you to stow valuables close at hand while the thoughtfully designed safety compartment allows for easy and quick access to your safety equipment. The Dyneema construction is waterproof and sturdy while the skimo style quick carry lets you quickly stow skis for quick booting up your objective. A-frame and diagonal ski carry options are also available for comfort during extended booting sections. A removable aluminum frame allows you to comfortably carry heavier loads and is removable for maximal weight savings. The Safeback system is removable and doesn't affect the functionality of the pack in any way. With 30L or 40L volumes available, you can easily select the pack that matches your intended use.
If you want to increase your margin of safety with the least possible weight penalty, the Raide Research LF Safeback packs are an interesting choice.
