Dynafit Mercury 2 Jacket

Discontinued

The Mercury 2 ski touring jacket retains the same functionality as the original, just with a better “hand”. To translate the apparel industry-speak, that means it just feels nicer. A light brushed lining is woven into the shell making it feel soft and inviting inside. Dynafit also changed the shell material-mix, adding a bit more flexibility and breathability. It remains wind-resistant and water-repellent due to the stretch weave. The Mercury 2 has one zippered chest pocket and two zippered hand pockets for ample storage. It has adjustable cuffs and waist so it stays in place on the move. Also included is an adjustable and helmet-compatible hood that also has a soft brushed lining. The Dynafit Mercury 2 shows off Dynafit’s improving skill when it comes to apparel design.

  • Stretch woven softshell is wind-resistant and water-repellent.
  • Light brushed lining adds warmth and comfort to your day.
  • Made with an abrasion-resistant weave of multiple fibers.
  • Helmet-compatible hood is comfortable and protective.
  • Finished with a durable water repellent (DWR) coating.

Question from Andy M

How wind-resistant is this jacket, say on a scale of 1 to 10? My favorite softshell for ski-touring used to be the Marmot ROM, when it was made mostly of Gore Windstopper, but Marmot changed the jacket in the last couple of years, and it is not as wind-resistant now. I picked up a BD Dawn Patrol shell last year, and it is mediocre in wind-resistance. I ski mostly in the Front Range of Colorado, where it tends to be very windy, so I am looking for a jacket with better than average wind-resistance.

Answer from Jeff

Andy a softshell jacket will only be wind proof if it has a membrane like Gore Windstopper or a waterproof barrier. The Dynafit Mercury 2 and Pro jackets have a tight heavy weave outer and a brushed liner inside. They are probably the warmest and most wind-resistant pieces we have in a softshell. The idea of Skimo clothing is breathable. We do have a Dynafit jacket that has Windstopper fabric on the chest, but the rest is a very light fabric. Speedfit.

Jeff, thanks for the patronizing response.

Hi Andy, we discussed this internally and there was certainly no intent to patronize, nor can we interpret any from reading the comment. Unfortunately none of us have used the ROM to compare directly; this jacket has average to above-average wind-resistance for it's category (softshells with no membrane).

Question from Eric

Does this jacket have internal drop pockets, or large enough hand pockets to hold wider skins?

Answer from Jeff

Eric, It just has the front pockets a 1 chest pocket. I measured the Medium, pockets are 12" tall and 6" wide. Guessing skins about 120+ would not fit real well, but below that should be fine.
