The Rise Beyond 96 Women's ski is a perfect example of Volkl's gold standard of hard-charging, powder-eating, and corn-slaying skis that are lauded by skiers of all shapes and sizes. The Rise 96 ski is the improved model of last year's Rise 98. Volkl has shaved off two millimeters from the underfoot, yielding a ski that is even easier to turn and more stable on hardpack. The ski is designed with Volkl's 3D Radius Sidecut - three different turning radii along the length of the ski - which enables this ski to handle high-speed long turns as well as quick turns in narrow spots. Rocker in the wide (138mm!) tip keeps you floating through even extra-fluffy Wasatch powder, while the underfoot camber gives you power on harder snow and improves edge hold in conjunction with the full-length sidewall. The Hybrid Tourlite Woodcore is lightweight yet includes strategically placed beech wood to improve binding retention as well as support powerful and aggressive skiers who like to push their gear to the limit. Put simply, the Volkl Women's Rise Beyond 96 is a mid-fat ski that was designed to do it all and be the only ski you need to experience the fullest of what the backcountry has to offer.

  • Triple-radius sidecut helps the ski handle all kinds of turns - no matter the speed - and allows you to redirect your turn on a dime.
  • Tip rocker is complemented by underfoot camber to help the ski perform in all snow conditions.
  • Hybrid Tourlite Woodcore is lightweight on the up but has the perfect balance of stability and pop for fun on the way down.
  • Perfect for the first-year tourer who needs a do-it-all ski or the seasoned skinner seeking a compliant ski that won't hold them back on aggressive descents.

Update 2022/23: The Rise Beyond W gets some new (and improved?) graphics.

Question from Jen R

I'm 5'7" and 125lb and looking at the Volkl Rise Beyond 96, the Atomic Backland 98W, and the Voile SuperchargerW / Hypercharger. I'm an advanced/fast skier at the resort but in the backcountry I'm definitely NOT aggressive. I want one ski that can do it all in the backcountry (that's the dream, right?) in Sierra cement, crust, and spring corn. These all come in a 163-165 length, which is about what I'm comfortable with. I want something easy to turn through trees yet has some stability on firm snow and float in open bowls. Priorities are light weight yet enough oomph to not get knocked around. My boots are Scarpa Gea RS. Which ski would you steer me toward, and would you suggest possibly a shorter length for my weight?

Hi Jen! All great skis of interest, but its hard to argue with the Rise Beyond for what you are looking to do! With a unique turning radius, you'll find a great combination of maneuverability and stability. Continuing, it's a versatile ski that'll perform well across a range of conditions including those found in the Sierras. Ski length often involves a fair bit of personal preference, however it is generally recommended to go slightly short to take advantage of the uphill efficiencies. With that being said, the 163cm is a great size for you. Send us an email at help@skimo.co if you'd like to discuss further. Thanks!

Question from Kendrick

Any differences between the men's and women's models besides topsheet color? From the specs it doesn't appear so.

Hi Kendrick, they come in different size ranges, too. The Women's ski is available in shorter lengths. Other than that and the color, same ski!

Question from Toni

I am an intermediate skier, but new to backcountry touring. I am a woman, 165 cm tall and 138 pounds. I am looking at 4 skis and having a hard time figuring out what would be a good fit for touring, easier to moderate backcountry slopes in Western snow (mostly powder, but want control for other conditions) for beginner to intermediate:
K2 Tailback 96
Atomic Backland 98 w
Volkl Blaze 94 w
Volkl Rise Beyond 96 w

Thank you for any assistance and input.

Hi Toni,

A lot of great ski options on your radar! If you are looking at dedicated touring skis, I will narrow your search to the K2 Talkback (assuming Tailback is a spelling error?), Atomic Backland 98 W, and the Volkl Rise Beyond 96 W, as the Volkl Blaze is more of a crossover ski than dedicated backcountry.

Of the other three remaining skis, I would recommend the Volkl Rise Beyond 96 W. This ski is a great daily driver. It has tons of float in the tip, but camber underfoot for solid edge hold on firmer snow. Also, it is quite damp, and can handle all kinds of crud. It has a surfy and easy to ski profile, and would be a really great ski for anyone from a beginner to someone with years of backcountry experience.
