The rule-makers are cracking down! Soon brakes will be required for races sanctioned by the International Ski Mountaineering Federation (ISMF). These ski brakes are perfect for those who need to make their ATK race bindings ISMF-compliant. They also work wonders for folks who like race bindings and prefer that their skis stop when they crash. The brakes are 70mm wide which comfortably hugs a race ski's midsection. Help prevent runaway skimo weapons with the ATK Race Brakes.

These race brakes are compatible with the unbraked ATK Revolution, SL, and Trofeo bindings. They will also work with Hagan Ultra & ZR bindings as well as the BD Helio 110 & 145. If you're looking for brakes for ATK touring bindings, see our listing for ATK Ski Brakes.

These brakes are sold in pairs.

Question from Xavi Gomez

Hi, It is possible to install this brake betwin plate r01 and atk race binding?

Thank you

Answer from Carlos M

Hi Xavi,

I would not recommend doing that! Instead, I would opt for the ATK Touring Ski Brake, which has an adjustment plate built in, and mount the race heel directly on that.

Do you think I could get these to work on a BD Cirque 78 ski?

Answer from jbo

Hi FjZ, it would be best to swap to a wider brake for those. The 75mm would work.

Question from Kevin M

Finally getting around to installing these and they close the gap too much to the bottom of my boot that I do not fully engage with the heel pins (see pic). Is the only solution to remove material from the bottom of my boot? Should there be a gap behind the slider plate for the heels to properly release?

Hi Kevin,

That's an interesting problem you have on your hands. I can't quite tell which binding you have. Would you mind taking a picture of your full binding from the side and send it to help@skimo.co when you have a chance? Thanks!

I think this is a nice brake design for backcountry skiing, but it's just not for racing. I already had some ATK race bindings and wanted to add brakes for ISMF compliance. These installed easily and it's a nice tidy package. I take issue with using them in a race setting though. The buttons that release the brakes aren't easy to access during a race transition from skins to downhill. Then securing the brakes for the transition to uphill is also fraught. It takes both hands and they tend to not be fully secure unless snow is cleared. Sometimes they even appear to be secured in the up position only to release later when you are skinning. I think the newer generation of race bindings where the brake action is integrated with the race flap is going to be the way to go.

Question from collinbrowse

Will these brakes also fit the Helio 180s? If not, are the black diamond helio brakes my only option?
3/8/2022
Answer from Tristan M

Hi Collin,

The Black Diamond Helio 180 is simply a Helio 145 heel on an adjustment track, so the hole pattern will line up with the ATK Race Brakes. The most ideal solution would be to remove the Helio 180 heels from their adjustment track, and fixed mount them using ATK Race Brakes. The brakes come with the longer screws required to accommodate the brakes underneath the heel. You may be able to mount the brakes on the adjustment track, but you will need to source the longer machine screws on your own, and it may affect the bite of the brake arms since they will be mounted in a more raised position in relation to the topsheet.
