A basic-yet-advanced aluminum shovel that won’t weigh you down. The Mammut Alugator Light features an anodized blade and telescopic shaft for some serious digging. The automatic zipper-lock system allows for quick assembly and deployment. The blade has stabilization ribs for rigidity, yet the back remains flat, which helps when cutting a snow profile. There are also strategically placed holes which cut weight and double as attachments points for building a sled or anchor. Best of all, the shovel is lightweight and the blade has a space-saving design that sits relatively flat in your pack. The Alugator Light is a great starter and finisher shovel for beginners and experts alike.
Blade is made from hardened and anodized aluminum, and is meant to take some abuse.
Space-saving blade design has pre-formed stabilization ribs for maximum rigidity.
Telescopic shaft is oval shaped for strength and has very little play in the joints.
Zipper-locking system enables precise guidance during a rushed assembly.
Symmetrical T-grip handle optimizes transfer of energy from arm to blade.
Attachment holes allow for building of snow anchors and rescue sleds.
Blade is sharpened and has integrated steps for adding foot pressure.
Update 2018/19: Mammut updated the colors because you love orange.
Update 2019/20: Mammut again updated the Alugator colors, and this time managed to make what might possibly be the prettiest shovel ever. If you've read this far, comment below whether 'Dragonfruit', 'Gold', or 'Neon Orange' is the best new color.
As someone who enjoys backcountry skiing, I appreciate how compact and lightweight the shovel is - it fits easily into my backpack without taking up too much space. The shovel feels sturdy and well-built. According to my scale, it weighs in at around 476 grams.
This shovel is great - strikes the perfect balance between being small and light (and fitting into a small race pack) with being robust enough to actually have faith in when you (hopefully never) need it.
This shovel is light and stout perfect to always have in a pack in move snow quickly with. I like the simple design and was surprised at how much snow can be moved with such a lightweight and small blade.
Extremely lightweight, small, robust, and with thoughtful features. It's clear Mammut has evolved this design--it is very easy to assemble in a hurry.
I was looking for a shovel on the smaller end of the spectrum (I'm not a burly dude, and the snow is really dense around here). It's absolutely perfect, and moves snow with a quickness!
An awesome shovel which meets the newish UIAA 156 recommendations for avalanche rescue while still being very compact and light. I don't think you need to hesitate carrying this in mid-winter conditions though, it's a real shovel and it will move snow. I've dug my car out a number of times with it this season, shoveled out plow-created blockades in front of my favorite parking spots, dug pits, etc. It's simple to assemble and disassemble even while wearing gloves, it fits in small packs (UD Skimo 18) and it's sturdy enough to move avy debris.

Question from
Jim
I'm ready to order this shovel but I see it is out of stock. I have a trip coming up in about 12 days and just thought I'd check if it would be back in stock any time soon so I could order it for that trip. Thanks!
I bought this shovel to replace a larger and heavier BD transfer model and so far I am loving it. The footprint of this shovel is really impressive given that it will fit seamlessly inside my low profile and lightweight Dynafit touring pack. I was a bit concerned about its snow moving capacity but after doing some testing with it out in the field it totally gets the job done. Perfect shovel for light and fast missions in the backcountry.
