Question from Carson Scott

I recently bought some shifts and didn’t realize I got the wrong size of brake, I don’t really want to buy a new pair, is there any way you can bend the brakes to make them fit my skis?
11/10/2022
Answer from Patrick C

Carson,

It depends on which brakes you have and the waist width of the ski. You can often bend a set of brakes to get an extra 5-6mm of clearance, but beyond that, they can start to hang up on the edge of your skis, or just not deploy correctly. If you want to get into the specifics feel free to e-mail us at help@skimo.co!

I have the 2020 Black Crows Camox Birdie womens with 97 width. I’m reading the 90 can stretch but would 100 be better? I have the 110 and seems a lot wider than normal brakes even tho they squeeze inward

Answer from Tristan M

Hi Maggie,

Generally, brakes can be stretched up to 6mm for additional width. In your case, I would probably go with the 100mm brakes.

Question from Jacob

Hi there. I have skis that are 112 underfoot with shift bindings that have a 110 brake. Where the brake actually sits is wider than 112, The brakes get stuck on the top sheet when I unclip from the bindings and I must give them a tap for them to go all the way down. Is there anything I can do to widen the brakes? Or should i consider trying to switch to a 120 brake? Thx

Answer from Julieana

Hey Jacob,
You should try bending the brakes out just a little. You shouldn't have to bend them too far to stop them from getting stuck on your ski.

Answer from Nik H

I've found that it can be useful to shave off a tiny bit of plastic on the inside/downward point of the plastic on the brake - the bit that sits just above the ski when the brake is up, and digs into the snow when it's down.

Whilst the brake was wide enough, it has quite a square profile - and was getting wedged against the edge of the ski.

With a little bit of angle on it, the brake naturally splays outwards as it deploys!

Which size do you recommend for G3 FINDr 94? 90mm assuming the brakes can be stretched or 100mm?

Answer from Tristan M

Hi Alex,

I would recommend going with the 90mm width. They should have no problem getting to 94mm with a small amount of stretching!

I would like to install a set of Shifts on BD Carbon Helios 104s. Sounds like it would be preferable to go with the 100mm width brakes?
12/30/2021
Answer from Tristan M

Hi Eric,

Generally, brakes can be stretched to accommodate up to an additional 6mm of width if necessary. The 100mm brakes should work just fine with some Helio 104s!

Question from Mitch Mccannon

Hello,

I bought a pair of atomic backland 107 underfoot and am wondering if the 120 brake will be too wide? I would like to have the option to go wider in the future and am weighing my options.

Answer from Teddy Young

Hey Mitch, thanks for reaching out! I'd recommend sticking with the 110mm as it already is a bit wider than the labeled width, and you can bend it out further if needed. What is the widest you might go up to?

What’s the best size brake to go with a W Head Kore 99 (95mm under foot)?
I was hoping Salomon shift 110s would fit my friends skis. Sounds like the brakes are too wide to match. Should I swap them out with the 90mm or 100mm brakes?

Answer from Brett S

Thanks for your question, Dave! For your ski, I think the 100mm brake would be the ticket! Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hello Michael, you should have no problem skiing a 110mm brake with your 99mm waisted ski, especially since you think you might get a wider ski in the future.

Question from Brian Goodheim

Here's a follow-up to my previous question:

I would really like to bend the ski brake arms in a bench vise rather than stressing the plastic ski brake assembly. Does the Shift heel assembly need to be removed from the ski in order to separate the ski brake from the rear release? Thanks.
12/23/2020
Answer from Tristan M

Hi Brian,

The safest way to bend brakes on a binding is to do so with your boot in the binding. This will protect areas like the plastic assembly from harm.

If you would like to isolate the brake mechanism from the rest of the binding in order to bend them with a vice, you will need to screw the binding all the way forward on its BSL adjustment track, slide it off of the heel plate, at which point you will be able to separate the brake mechanism from the heel piece. The Brake arms themselves cannot be removed from their housing. Hopefully, this answers both of your questions!
