Can’t decide if you want to optimize for the up or the down? Looking for a boot that does it all? Atomic has opted to make the decision easy for you in the form of the Backland XTD Carbon 115 W. Combining the best of the lightweight Backland and burly Hawx XTD series of boots, the Backland XTD Carbon 115 W provides a stable and powerful skiing platform while maintaining a relatively low weight. The impressive 74-degree cuff rotation will help the skin track fly by and even encourage you to take that extra lap. The Hybrid Overlap Shell construction makes getting the boot on a little easier during cold morning starts whilst allowing the foot to be securely wrapped, which will especially be welcome during aggressive descents. Whether booting up an icy couloir or walking across an icy parking lot, the Skwalk Touring sole will confidently provide traction, allowing you to plod on with confidence.

Compared to the Backland XTD Carbon 120, the women's model offers a lower cuff height, slightly softer flex, and a smaller size range including a true 22/22.5 mondo shell option. Get yourself the best of both worlds with the Backland XTD.

  • Carbon-powered cuff and shell dialed to a 115 flex rating.
  • Hybrid Overlap Shell construction allows smooth step-in and good foot wrap.
  • Impressive 74 degrees of cuff rotation on smooth Frictionless Mirror Pivots for easy and natural walking.
  • Free / Lock 4.5 external walk mode lever allows simple clearing of ice and snow and forward lean adjustment.
  • Cross Lace 2.5 “Z” shaped cable and buckle combination on the lower provides excellent ankle and heel hold.
  • Comes in the elusive true 22/22.5 mondo shell size for those small feet!

Question from Aivy

I currently have the Dynafit Radical (not pro) and I'm looking for a new ski boot. I'm not super impressed by the walk mode in these when I'm booting up things, so I'm looking for something better that has a wide forefront and a narrow heel. The heel on these are also a little loose on me and now causes me to tape my navicular or else it creates massive hotspots (probably because the liner is also packed out).

Would the Backland Carbon XTD be a good option coming from the Radicals? I'm a little concerned with the gaiter getting wet. How would this fair up in spring skiing conditions or booting up wet snow?

I've also tried the Dynafit Blacklights and thought they were also a good fit, but seemed like a slight pressure point in the mid foot, which I'm sure it could be punched out. I also noticed the heel to be slightly looser.

Any thoughts/recommendations? How do these both ski compared to each other?

Lastly, are there limitations that I should consider with skis for these boots? The Blacklights are quite lighter. Would it even make sense to use the Salomon Echo 106 or the Lumen 98 with these and tech bindings?

Hi Aivy, this is getting a bit detailed for the website, shoot us an email at help@skimo.co! These could be a good option though. The fit is overall very similar to the Radical, except maybe a bit lower over the instep. I doubt they would fix your heel issues. Are you using footbeds? They can help hold your heel in place.

And which Blacklight did you try? The old one is a good bit lighter and softer than the Backland Carbon XTD. The new one is much more similar - probably stiffer and less progressive than the Atomic.

These are all on the light side for the QST Echo for sure. Depends what length you have and how tall you are. But generally speaking, they'll work great in good conditions, and maybe be a bit light to ski hard in bad snow.

The La Sportiva Skorpius CR II is one that might work well for you fit-wise - wide at the forefoot, but narrow at the heel. The only thing is they fit lower over the instep than the Radical.

Hi there! This boot looks awesome. Im currently skiing the Atomic women’s backland pro and I am wondering what the last on this boot for the size 22/22.5? I read online that it is a 100 mm last but I know that last vary in the length of boot. Thanks!

Answer from Carlos M

Hi Muy,

The last is 92mm in the 22.5! Luckily Atomic actually prints the last on the sole for each unique size. Generally speaking, the stated last (in this case 100mm) is for a 26/26.5 shell, and you can add or subtract 2mm with every mondo size up or down.

Overall, this is a medium to slightly wider fitting boot.
