If you already have ten toes, you might consider getting some heels to match. The Dynafit binding heel pieces can be used to replace borked ones, build an unsanctioned super binding, or be stashed in your collection of other unusual parts. It's also not a bad idea to have a backup plan if you're planning an extended stay in a remote place. See the table below for details.

Question from Ryan

Two questions:

1) Is it possible to use the Speed Radical heel with the TLT Radical ST 2.0 toe? Or is this a case of "yer gonna die"? Since I already have the toes, and they're mounted with Quiver Killers, I'm wondering if I can save a few bucks this way. If this isn't the best idea, is it possible, using Quiver Killers, to switch between the TLT Radical 2.0 toe and the Speed Radical toe? Or will it be too close?
2) Is it possible, using Quiver Killers, to switch between the TLT Radical 2.0 heel and the Speed Radical heel on the same ski? Or will it be too close?

Considering this setup on my Nanga Parbats to save a little weight for longer tours.

Thanks in advance.

Hey Ryan, thanks for reaching out!

1) This isn't definitely a case of "yer gonna die" but it's also not definitely not a case of "yer gonna die." Maybe more of a case of "we don't recommend it, but try at yer own risk if yer motivated." Either way, probably not wise to mix any part of the Rad 2.0 and any part of a more traditional binding like the Speed Rad as the springs in both the toe and heel on each binding is tuned differently and who knows how they will end up behaving in release tests. Could be so low that the binding is barely usable or it could be so high that the binding release forces exceed that of the strength of your bone structure. Either scenario isn't anywhere near ideal though and I don't recommend it.

2) I checked the hole pattern for both bindings and it looks like that's probably not gonna work. We recommend at least 15mm between each QK insert and there's just not enough space in the Radical 2.0 hole pattern for a Speed Radical to fit with inserts. You could potentially get away with it if you didn't have inserts in the ski, but there's still not a whole lot of potential there.

FWIW, I'm doing the inverse of that with very good results - Using Speed Radical toes with Radical ST 2.0 heels. Releases are appropriate (it does release, but no pre-releases). Skied many times with this setup on Voile Vectors last year, both BC and on Resort. I used the B&D 6.4mm shims under the toes.

That's awesome to hear actually, I'm glad to hear that it's going well. We have definitely built a few of these setups before and have had no negative reactions (so far) so it sounds like it's entirely doable. Sounds like my apprehension was a bit excessive to begin with. Still not recommended by Dynafit and we haven't been able to put these setups on our release testing machine so I can't comment on exactly how it performs under stress, but it sounds like it's working close enough to appropriately that it's feasible, which is sweet.

Question from Andres

Looks like the radiacal ST heels are sold without the bases. Is this correct? Id so will they fit on the base/spindle from the older vertical ST?

Answer from jbo

Hi Andres, unfortunately the Radical and Vertical spindles are not compatible.

I have a pair of first gen (2012) radical st bindings (I already updated both heel pieces, which broke). I would like to get some spare parts for an extended trip I will do soon. Just want to confirm that the radical st heel pieces above would work. Thanks!!

Answer from jbo

Hi Alexis, yes all Radical ST generations are compatible.

Question from brian

I have a pair of first gen radical ft with a broken roof plate. I am starting to understand that this is a very common failure and that there was an updated parts package or replacement heel to fix it. I can't find any mention of it on Dynafit web site. How can I resolve this issue with my bindings. Do the gen 1 FT heel pieces you guys sell have the update?
3/7/2017
Answer from Trace Leches

Hey Brian, yeah that is an issue with the older Radical heel pieces unfortunately. There are 3 iterations of that heel piece now, the original, an updated heel piece (reinforced so it's a bit stronger), and then the latest iteration that has addressed this issue even further. How old are your bindings?

Question from Bjornar

Hey,
Which heel piece will fit reasonably with the speed radical toe piece that weighs less than the original speed radical heel tower? I have been using a la sportiva rt heel piece but these have broken on me and I want a bomber (and reasonably light) heel piece to match with the speed radical toes. Thanks!
2/23/2017
Answer from jbo

Hi Bjornar, you could try something like a Plum Race 150 heel on a Kreuzspitze 14mm plate (same hole pattern as Speed Radical).

Hey Markus. Yup, the dual springs and end cap are in there, but no base plate.

Question from James

Do you have instructions for swapping the heel piece on the Radical ST 2.0? I can't get my old one off the brake / base assembly!
2/3/2017
Answer from jbo

Hi James, the key is to turn it 180 degrees so it's facing backward. Then it will lift off.
2/3/2017
Answer from James J

Hi - thanks for the reply, but I can't see how to turn it 180 degrees; the metal clip which locks the brakes in the up position while touring stops the heel piece rotating around this far (it physically doesn't fit). I've tried all other possible rotations and no joy.
2/7/2017
Answer from jbo

Hi James, it'll go 180, don't be shy. Hold down the brake and go for it.
2/7/2017
Answer from James J

Yep I figured it out, thanks. The trick was to partially depress the brake, and then it all fits perfectly - there's a sweet spot. The mind boggles at the design that goes in to designing these things; true 3D chess!

Speed radical heel update...this was asked last year though an update would be helpful. Do the speed radical heel pieces come with the metal plate, stronger screws and reinforced housing? Thank you.

Answer from Trace Leches

Hey Marcus, the heel pieces have stronger screws and reinforced housings but haven't gotten the metal plate update yet! Should be sometime this summer that we see that update.

Question from Neil

Wondering if there is an older Dynafit heel piece that has the same hole configuration as the latest TLT Radical ST 2.0 bindings? I'm looking for a spare heel piece for my repair kit. Same for the toe piece? Thanks
11/28/2016
Answer from Trace Leches

Hey Neil, unfortunately that hole pattern is unique to the Radical 2.0 and won't match any other toe, heel, or adjustment plate. We do sell the toes and heels individually though, why not just carry another one of each of those if you're worried about something? Check our article about Binding Hole Patterns if you have any further questions.

Question from ScSe

Do you know of any way to increase the step-in resistance of the RC1 heel piece?

It clicks in with less than body weight (<150#) which makes for potentially awkward race transitions if it happens at the wrong time.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi Scott, that's a hard thing to change. I'd just flip them up last!

I have a pair of radical st bindings. The heel piece has failed and it seems to be a reoccurring issue. Could I replace the readical st heels with speed turn heels and keep the radical toe pieces? Same hole pattern? Same ramp angle? Can I put the radical brakes on the speed turn heels?
3/15/2016
Answer from jbo

Hi Keith, send us a picture of your heel piece and we'll get it sorted through Dynafit. Yes, you can use the Turn heels with those toes and without re-drilling. No brakes, however. Pin heights are listed here.

Question from Michael M

Question about the Speed Radical heels.
Hi,

I was reading on wildsnow about the newest (as of Feb 2016) Speed Radical heel pieces. Apparently they have an extra metal plate on top of the heel for reinforcement.

Are your stock this newest version?

Looking to maybe upgrade to the very newest heel pieces. Don't want any issues in the future. I contacted Dynafit but they directed me to a dealer for a specific part number.
2/26/2016
Answer from jbo

Hi Michael, I'm told all stock in North America is v.4 with stronger screws, but no metal plate. Our inspections support that statement.

Question from William

Are these prices per heel piece or for a pair or set?

Do the speed radical and STs have three height positions?

Thanks. BTW - I love your company, great product variety, prices and service.

Cheers,
William Myers
12/28/2015
Answer from jbo

Hi William, thanks for the feedback! The heel pieces are priced individually, so you need Qty of 2 for a pair. The Radicals have 2 riser heights plus a flat-on-ski position, so maybe that counts as three.

Question from ScSe

Just to confirm: the Low Tech heels on this page are the previous (aluminium) heel pieces, not the current (plastic) heel pieces, correct?

Answer from jbo

Hi Scott, correct. New ones will be called 2.0.

One more: Do the non-2.0 Low Tech heel pieces share the same hole pattern as the non-2.0 Superlite heel pieces?

I'm juggling some bindings between skis and wondering what my options are for the remount.

Thanks!
12/30/2015
Answer from jbo

The Superlite 1.0 and LTR 1.0 share the same front two holes but the rear hole is further back on the Superlite. They both use the same tripod adjustment plate. More info on hole patterns is here.
12/31/2015
Answer from ScSe

Excellent. Thanks. That's exactly what I needed. With a 12mm difference (25 vs. 37) in heel hole pattern length, it looks like a Low Tech Race could be swapped for a Speed Superlite.

12mm should be enough space to drill a new hole for a 12.5mm Torx screw? Or will the hole edges still be too close?

Thanks for your help.
12/31/2015
Answer from jbo

You should be good to go, provided you have a ski with a reasonably reinforced mounting area.

Hi Brian, for a new set, the best option is a set of Radical ST heels with brakes. You can also check for used parts or do a trade-in.

Question from Chris

Hello,

I noticed today that the heel piece on my Radical FT's is cracked and the top screws no longer hold the assembly together. Is the heelpiece you are selling here compatible across the multiple generations of the binding? I believe it was purchased in fall of 2013 but not sure what generation that is.
Thanks

Answer from jbo

Hi Chris, the main heel housing has been stable for several years, so you should be good with a replacement.
